David Chase’s first and (so far) only feature directorial credit was this 2012 music-infused drama, loosely based on his own coming of age as a rock-crazy kid growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s. Chase’s avatar, Douglas (played by a young and electrifying John Magaro) dreams of rock superstardom, over the strenuous objections of his conservative father—played by James Gandolfini, modest and muted, a marked departure from his work as the gregarious focal point of Chase’s The Sopranos. Jason Bailey, author of the new biography Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend, will be on hand to introduce the film and sign books after.
