NOT FADE AWAY w/ Intro & Signing @ Alamo Drafthouse, Downtown L.A.
Sunday, April 13 - 1pm
David Chase’s first and (so far) only feature directorial credit was this 2012 music-infused drama, loosely based on his own coming of age as a rock-crazy kid in New Jersey in the 1960s. Chase’s avatar, Douglas (played by a young and electrifying John Magaro) dreams of rock superstardom, over the strenuous objections of his conservative father—played by James Gandolfini, modest and muted, a marked departure from his work as the gregarious focal point of Chase’s The Sopranos. (Gandolfini said that the character reminded him of his own father, a bricklayer and custodian whose working-class ethos caused his son no small hesitation to follow his dream of acting.) -
CRIMSON TIDE w/ Intro & Signing @ The Frida Cinema, Santa Ana, CA
Wednesday, April 16 - 8:30pm
Celebrate the thrilling tension of Crimson Tide on its 30th anniversary, screening at The Frida Cinema as part of our Gene Hackman tribute! The film takes place aboard the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine during a tense international crisis. When the captain (Gene Hackman) and his executive officer (Denzel Washington) clash over the proper response to a potentially catastrophic situation, the battle for control of the ship escalates into a gripping psychological duel. With the fate of the world at stake, each decision becomes a matter of life or death. This high-stakes submarine drama, directed by the amazing Tony Scott, remains one of the most riveting military thrillers of all time. -

IN THE LOOP w/ Intro & Signing @ Nitehawk Cinema, Prospect Park, Brooklyn
Wednesday, April 30 - 7:15pm
James Gandolfini displays his impressive but unappreciated flair for comedy in this 2009 political satire from director Armando Iannucci. Spinning off of his British television smash The Thick of It, and including several of that show’s funniest characters (particularly the Prime Minister’s Director of Communications Malcolm Tucker, played with foul-mouthed zeal by Peter Capaldi), Iannucci skewers relations between the U.S. and the U.K. in the run-up to the Iraq War. The film would serve as the bridge between The Thick of It and Iannucci’s U.S. hit Veep, featuring several of the latter show’s stars as well (including Anna Chlumsky, Mimi Kennedy, David Rasche and Zach Woods). The Academy Award-nominated screenplay was penned by Iannucci, Jesse Armstrong (who would go on to create Succession), Simon Blackwell (Peep Show) and Tony Roche. -
